Bulgaria attracts 150 000 romanian tourists in summer 2008

About 150 000 Romanians came to Bulgaria for their vacation in the summer of 2008, according to data published in the Romanian press.

The total number of Romanians who went abroad for a summer holiday in 2008 is 700 000. Greece remains the most popular destination for them with over 250 000 Romanian tourists.

The number of Romanians who visited Turkey over the summer registers the highest growth. Romania’s Black Sea coast was visited by 100 000 foreigners in summer 2008.

According to the annual edition of Economic Analysis of OBG The Report: Bulgaria 2008 the tourist sector continues to play an important role in Bulgarian economy creating new jobs and providing a steady stream of foreign tourists in the country.

The tourist industry provides 14% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and is a valuable source of foreign currency, which is extremely necessary to balance the budget. The sector also plays an important role in the labor market, providing 371 000 jobs in 2007, accounting for 12.3% of the total number of jobs in the country

91 new hotels completed in Bulgaria in April-June

91 new hotels were completed in Bulgaria during the second quarter of 2008 according to data of the National Statistical Institute released Monday.

Thus, the total number of hotel and hostels in the country has reached 2 643, with a total of 105 500 rooms, and 234 000 beds.

39% of all hotels with 67% of the beds in Bulgaria are located along the Black Sea coast. There are 272 hotels in the District of Burgas, 223 in the District of Varna, and 81 in the District of Dobrich.

The number of persons who stayed at Bulgarian hotels in April-June 2008 was 128 000 more than in the same period of 2007 reaching 1,3 million persons with 4,6 million night’s lodging. 33% of these were Bulgarians.

The number of guests from Malta rose fivefold, from Latvia - by 170%, from Estonia - by 130%, from Lithuania - by 65%, Poland - 53%, Slovenia - 52%, Austria - 43%.

The greatest number of foreigners, who stayed at Bulgarian hotels over the second quarter came from Germany - 19% of the total number.

The total income from hotel stays in April-June grew by 9% compared to the same period of 2007 to reach BGN 175 M.

Airport in Bulgaria’s Plovdiv Modernized for BGN 40 M

About BGN 40 M will be invested in the modernization of the airport in Bulgaria’s second largest city of Plodviv.

The news was announced Monday by the Bulgarian Transport Minister Petar Mutafchiev after a meeting of the governing board of the state owned airport company.

The Plovdiv Airport, which serves as an alternative to the Airport in Sofia, will also be equipped with a blind landing system.

Modernization package includes the construction of a new terminal at the Plovdiv Airport, which will cost about BGN 38 M. Of there BGN 18 M will be provided by Alpha Finance Holding, which owns 58,08% of the airport, and the rest will come from the state budget.

According to Mutafchiev, the project must be completed before the end of the term of the present government, i.e. by the summer of 2009. After that the Plovidv Airport will be awarded a higher class.

Alternate tourism in Bulgaria has much potential

According to Dragomir Domuschiev (a member of the Bulgarian associations for alternate tourism), Tourists from Europe, USA and Australia visit Bulgaria to observe animals threatened with extinction or rare plants and butterflies. He also added that annually about 5000 foreigners visit this country to enjoy the alternative tourism opportunities and visits increase every year.

Unlike the average tourist, looking for a good accommodation on the Black Sea coast and a sunshade on the beach, the alternative tourist prefers the wilderness to discover a rare bird, flower or a butterfly.

Airport in Northeast Bulgaria City of Turgovishte to be reopened

The airport in the northeastern Bulgarian city of Turgovishte will be rehabilitated and reopened in two years with a project that has already been approved by the Ministry of Transport.

The news was announced Friday by the Mayor of Turgovishte Dr. Krasimir Mirev, who explained the project for the reopening of the local airport would be executed in cooperation with the Airport in the city of Plovdiv, and would cost about BGN 2,5 M.

The airport was closed down about a decade ago, and its tracks are all covered in grass, and the windows of the tower, and of the adjacent buildings had been broken by marauders.

The Turgovishte Airport will initially be used for the landing of small charter planes, and then for cargo flights for all of northeast Bulgaria.
